What’s the origin of bruschette?

Some say they were invented by chance in Ancient Rome to store homemade bread. Over the course of centuries, farmers have renewed this tradition by slicing loaves to be toasted or “bruscate” (grilled) on fireplace embers, before seasoning them with olive oil and cherry tomatoes.
